ND STORY

Hello, I'm Tash

I'm 42 years old and I was diagnosed ADHD this year, 2025, after many years of thinking I might be neurodivergent.

"Supermarkets are challenging"

"After reflecting on whether or not pubic/busy places affect me - I think they definitely do, it's just not something I've had to think deeply about as I just thought it was the norm for everyone. I often have to zone out when I’m going anywhere busy, that's how I cope.

For example in the supermarket (especially if I am in a massive one) I find it really overstimulating- not just the displays/ colours/ lighting but it’s mainly the noise - there is just noise coming from everywhere and I find it really disorienting- so I usually use my AirPods to drown everyone out!

Impulsivity is also a factor when going to a store- like I have to plan exactly what I need and make a list but by the time I get there I don’t know where the list is and I end up buying loads of stuff I don’t need - I know this a problem for non neurodivergent people too though.

But I feel supermarkets, the cluttered and overwhelming layout, it's like a bombardment on the senses and I just want to get out as soon as I can so I buy things quickly and irratically. I don't feel like I can calmly walk around and make good, sensible choices.

I tend to avoid it all together to be honest if I think somewhere will be too busy- especially if I have kids with me. The whole thing is overwhelming and overstimulating and anxiety often sets in- like where will I park, how will I queue for that long? And remembering everything. I’m not sure what would help apart from noise cancellation but I have felt that it is hard for me."
